The Elite Five

1. Broken Social Scene presents Kevin Drew: Spirit If

Probably will be the biggest one of the week. This is not necessarily a BSS album. It’s being presented as a Kevin Drew solo album (featuring members of BSS) as part of a new ‘Broken Social Scene presents’ series (Brendan Canning is next, coming in ’08). Ohad and Charles Spearin are on this one (they’re also in Do Make Say Think) so that’s not a bad little roster there.

2. Eddie Vedder: Into the Wild OST

It’s always good to hear from Veddie and even though I usually stay away from the old soundtracks, I’ll be sure to be giving this one a listen. I have fond memories of Vedder and his previous solo stuff so this one should be all right then. You also got a little Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney on here.

3. Motion City Soundtrack: Even if it Kills Me

: Here’s one for the kiddies. This band is kind of like a teenager’s Romper Room. They always like to bounce around to it, nearly as much as the singer’s hair must while he’s on stage. This one should be a pretty big seller too, kids have a lot of money these days.

4. The Sadies: New Seasons

: It’s pretty sad that when the Sadies are mentioned most people are thinking “Neko Case’s old back up band eh?” or sometimes with older people it’s like “aren’t they friends with Jim Cuddy?” The Sadies don’t get as much respect as they deserve, even with the attention that ‘alt-country’ or ‘folk-rock’ or whatever you’re calling it is getting these days.

5. Akron/Family: Love Is Simple

This is the one for me, my pick of the week. Last year’s Meek Warrior was so good that I tried to not bother trimming my beard for a long time. That didn’t work out well and I, in no way, gained the powers of Akron/Family, so there’s no point in trying it.

Remember Me?

6. H.I.M.: Venus Doom

Ugh, why did I bother including this. I certainly have nothing good to say at all.

7. Rammstein: Volkerball

Remember what I said about KMFDM the other week? Pretty much the same deal. Does anyone know if these guys are still singing in all German? I guess there’s no answer to that since no one still listens to them. Think ‘The Nihilists’ in The Big Lebowski

Not My Bag - Maybe Yours?

8. James Blunt: All the Lost Souls

Not sure that anyone who is too keen on Blunt will be on this site, but if you have an aunt whose birthday is coming up or something, well this is good to know. Tell her I send my regards.

9. KT Tunstall: Drastic Fantastic

This part should be called “Not My Bag, Maybe Me Mum’s” for this week. I’m not too sure if she likes the James Blunt much, but that is certainly some mum music if I’ve ever heard it. But I do know me mum likes KT Tunstall because she always hums that ‘Cherry Tree’ song. Whoo Hoo.
