Long weekend Track Fu! This is going to be a busy month, so hopefully we're starting it off well -- at least on the music front.

1. Boys Who Say No - No I Won't

Boys Who Say No have the fortune of playing on a bill with The Stables, who are great. I can see that their weirdo folk country might go over well with that bunch. It's got the hallmarks and simplicity that works for the genre, mixed with unexpected touches and an interesting melody. I like it.

Rancho Relaxo w/ the Stables & Streetlight Light as part of TWM 21 $5 on Friday August 8th

2. Spookey Ruben - Superpoke

Remember Spookey Ruben? It was years ago when "These Days Are Old" was in heavy rotation on Much Music, but I still do. It kind of got stuck in your head. I can see this song doing that too; Spookey's got an ear for a good pop hook. (I know, totally biased now. Don't care.)

Relaxo Rancho w/ Hooded Fang and Steve Singh as part of No Shame $5 on Thursday August 7th

3. Archipelagos - You Wouldn't Know

Archipelagos's lead singer has a voice that makes me sound like moody British rock of the past. I really like the melody in the verses, and while the song is not overly surprising or mind-blowing, something about it really appeals to me.

The Boat w/ Terror Lake & Colourlist as part of Pitter Patter Nights $5 on Thursday August 7th

4. Bruce Pennisula - Rosie

This almost sounds like church, this song by Bruce Peninsula. Indie rock church? The effect is cool, with the rough voice on the lead singer and the backing chorus, punctuated by heavy percussion, but I expect it really has gravitas during a live setting.

Whipper Snapper Gallery w/ The Got To Get Got, One Heart Many Hands, $8

5. Our Sleepless Forest - Nomads

A haiku:

Our Sleepless Forest

Neat noises sound very cool

But I miss lyrics

6. Love As Laughter - Cross Eyed Beautiful

This is a good song. Love as Laughter are playing in Brooklyn with Black Keys and Tapes N Tapes, so they must be cool. But this is a lot less scene than might be expected -- just a good song that rolls along with a nice bass groove. Doesn't hit you over the head, but it wins you over.

7. Scars On Broadway - They Say

Scars on Broadway -- ha ha, I get it. I do not get this, though. It sounds kind of like Queens of the Stone Age, but less good.

8. Spy Island - Ecrose Fireworks

Uh, is it wrong to admit that I'm kind of not paying much attention at this point? By that token, Spy Island are pretty good but not entirely reversing that trend.

Winner

Quite a lot of good stuff here -- Love As Laughter won, but had some serious competition.

Loser

ZZzzzzz...
