1. John McKiel - 123 My Friends

The best way I can think of to describe Jon McKiel is that he sounds very Canadian: a mash-up of early Sloan, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Joel Plaskett's solo stuff and the Northern Pikes. That should get you started.

2. The Heart Beats - The More Loving One

The Heart Beats are not as twee as their name would have you believe. It's pretty, sure, but with the orchestral electro instrumental backing and vocals that are sweet but sound like they could easily not be, it's not as delicate as I would have assumed at the start.

3. High Plains Drifter - Scent-o-meter

First I saw "JAM BAND" in their genre description on MySpace. Then I heard a lot of sax. Sorry, High Plains Drifter, but I'm out. I really don't like sax, or funky jam bands.

4. Black Crowes - Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution

At this point, most of my awareness of Black Crowes comes from reality television talent competitions and Guitar Hero. This paint-by-numbers track does nothing to change my mind, and it shouldn't do anything to change yours either.

5. Modey Lemon - It Made You Dumb

Modey Lemon sound like 1996. Makes me think of that Tripping Daisy album I only bought because I like "I Got A Girl". (Let's face it - - that's why everyone bought that album.)

6. Girl Talk - Shut the Club Down

I like this Girl Talk song a lot. Good, that means I can keep pretending I'm cool.

7. The Duke Spirit - My Sunken Treasure

I thought I had heard of The Duke Spirit before, and they were indeed in our database. I don't remember what I heard though. I do like this song, anyway -- good chorus, and it's the kind of catchy that sneaks up on you, which is my favourite type.

8. Ponytail - Beg Waves

Ponytail. I got my hair cut today, and now I can't have a ponytail anymore. I like my hair, but I might miss that. I don't think I'll miss this song once it's over, though.

Girl Talk was refreshing like a cold iced tea that doesn't aggravate your sensitive teeth. You see what I did there?

Loser

This Black Crowes song is about as fun as a tooth abscess.
