Lymbyc Systym

Love Your Abuser

Review Date: 2007-03-30

Lymbyc Systym (not Lymbic System) is a post-rock duo including the brothers Jared and Michael Bell from Tempe, Arizona. So, let's say the things that need to be said now, so this review can be more efficient.

Lymbyc Systym make a style of music that is very (and increasingly) likely to be the flavor of the week. Why? Because all the big names of the post-rock scene receive a tribute (it won't be mentioned anywhere, but use your ears) on Love Your Abuser. The ambiance here is very much comparable to Mogwai in Happy Songs For Happy People, and the piano notes found in certain songs could be compared to Sigur Ros. The duo also depends on electro glitches à la Album Leaf to build up their songs.

It's probably impossible for a duo like Lymbyc Systym not to be compared to those agove, and with an album like this as a debut LP, there are high chances of hearing of them again with a second one (lots of people like to hear new songs by their favorite bands, from my experience). The band, like it or not, places a very highly safe bet on the table here -- probably one of the safest I've heard in the last two years in the post-rock world.

This, a 39-minute work, is a very easy-listening experience. It is pleasant, nothing seems to last forever and nothing ever sounds out of place. Other people I've talked to have a different opinion about Lymbyc Systym and I respect that, as I am not truth incarnate, am I? This record just seemed like deja-vu hundreds of times, but at least these two brothers have good taste.
