C'mon

In The Heat Of The Moment

Review Date: 2006-03-27

Most of you may not have heard of C'mon, but they are a Canadian Power Trio that will rock your ass off. A lot of the music on the album is upbeat and contains a sicke amount of energy, the kind that I need to enjoy a rock album. The guitar on the album is quite wicked if you ask me, a lot of the time I'm just spacing out listening to that rock away, my problem is that I get hooked on guitar when the riffs are catchy or when it just happens to be the thing that gets featured quite often in a song. I'm a sucker for electric guitar, what can I say, anyways that isn't to say that I don't enjoy the band overall I actually enjoy the music and think that it’s put together nicely. Canadian music veteran Ian Blurton is involved with this band on guitar and vocals and he is from a band that I used to purchase albums of called Change Of Heart, and as well Blurtonia. Knowing that Blurton was involved with this I knew that I would like the vocals on the album but I am surprised to see the difference in the guitar.

One thing that I noticed about C'mon is that everyone chips in on vocals which is something that I like to see on every album, I don't know why but I just think that its a good reflection of the band to include everyone in the vocals. It makes it look like there is more than one person contributing to the lyrical content. Now I am not much of a historian but those of you who would like more background information or touring information on C'mon can get that at their website, its here. Its actually a pretty nice website, I mean its no Twowaymonolgues, but it has a bunch of band on the band including merchandise and mailing lists, so if you need some more of C'mon after hearing this album then I would suggest giving that site a hit.

The first song on the album is called "This is Yr Captain". The bass in this song is heavy ass shit, but it’s wicked. The guitar goes right along with it to double the rock mood, its a sweet opening track to this album. Overall there aren't too many vocals in this song but that’s ok to me because their seems to a larger focus on the music that is making me piss off the downstairs neighbours. Music like this has to be listened to with a giant amount of volume, the kind that receives a noise complaint, if you like rock I'm sure you have an idea of what I'm talking about. While I was dicking around on their website I found this wicked thing feature , its a record player with some of the tracks from the new album so that’s a good place to start if you want to hear some of the songs on the album. I don't know all the ones that are on their but just hit it up and you can find out for yourself.

The second track is another one of my preferred listens, it’s called "Come Taste The Rock". What I like about this song is that instead of letting the rock die after the opening track they just rolled with it and make a second bitchin’ tune. The wicked part about this song is some neat sound that is added in by the drummer, it’s like a ticking noise or something, I don't know what the hell you call it or what sound could produce it but its definitely cool to me. One thing that I like about the album is the length of it, just breaching the thirty minute mark. I don't know why but I think most bands can make a tight little rock or punk album in about thirty minutes, I mean it does depend on the band and everything but C'mon does an excellent job of formatting their album. The guitar is again really sicke in this track, the riff that is used near the beginning of the track is the one that carries throughout the track and if you ask me that is the part of the song that I like the most. It just gets in my head and refuses to leave, it may do this to you so if stuff like that drives you crazy then I would maybe steer clear of this killer track.

The eighth song is a fucking awesome track, its called "I Don't Wanna". It's not the type of song that everyone will love but that could be because it is only a minute and a half long. The vigour in this song is amazing, the guitar and drums do a sweet job with the pacing for the track and the vocals do an amazing job of fitting into the grittiness of the overall song. They use a lot of 'Na na na na na's' in the song and I think that it works well with the speed at which the track is moving. Any song that is this short almost demands this type of pacing and energy otherwise the band is probably making some weird and innovative track which I likely would not interest me. But have no fear because C'mon is down with rocking, there’s nothing else hidden here and no messages to decipher, which is more than alright by me.

The tenth song has an interesting title the name of it is "I Got A Fever". At first I was hoping that it had something to do with the sketch that Will Farrell was in from Saturday Night Live where he plays assloads of cowbell and Christopher Walken keeps telling him that he wants more cowbell, so much that he has a fever for it. Anyways, the song is actually about a fever for a female that is driving this dude crazy because she is making him so hot. I guess that would be the more obvious topic of the two options but then again I am a complete moron sometimes. This would be one of those examples. There is a pimp little laid back rock guitar solo shortly after the two minute mark which reminds me of Hendrix, Ian Blurton is the guitarist and I must say he more often then not impresses me with the work that he does on the album. This is probably because I'm addicted to good guitarists, most of this stems from the fact that I wish I could play guitar and that makes me think that a wicked catchy riff is something worth salivating over like an envious moron.

The fifth song is called "My Witness" the one unique thing about this song is that I think they may be using a cowbell in the track. Now I could be wrong but that’s what it sounds like. The song starts off with a bit of build up, just the vocals and guitar for about ten seconds and then the rest of the band kicks in and the real rock begins. I was doing a little research on C'mon and found out that this is not their first album, its the second full length one, they have two EPs as well, but I think I would be interested in hearing the first album to find out if this one is more badass then its predecessor. The song overall has a chill rocking feel to it, the cowbell sound definitely helps, but I think that’s because it is original and gives the songs a bit of a twang that makes it more attractive to me.

The last track that I'm going to talk about is "Bad Angel", it’s the twelfth song on the album. This song starts with a wicked run on the guitar, which is if you ask me is a sweet way to start off any track, not just a C'mon song. What I would like to do is see C'mon in concert sometime I think that it would be a blast to check these guys out live, now if they would only come to London that would save me the travel time., since the closest show they are playing that is to me is in Kitchener and its on April 8th. My point though is that music like this tends to have the best effect overall when it is heard live, especially when their is opportunity for a talented band like C'mon to flex its creativity muscle at a live show where there are fewer boundaries and restrictions than with that of a recording studio. Regardless though I have enjoyed the C'mon album, I haven't had a chance to hear some kickass rock lately so this was a welcome change from over saturating my brain with punk rock and hip hop.

Tracks to Hear: "This is Yr Captain", "Bad Angel", "My Witness", "I Don't Wanna", "Come Taste The Rock", "I Got A Fever", "Cut Me Down", "Burn All Night", "Call My Name"

Did C'mon come ready to rock your face off?
Would I be lying if I didn't say I was pretty surprised that I liked this album this much?

Score: 8.9

(At first I was leery about Dan giving me an album that a band had sent him, but it actually worked about because I like this album a lot and it has found itself in my player quite a bit since Dan was down last weekend. Anyways the point is that C'mon is a band worth looking into and I'm always happy to find another Canadian band that I like the work of, I hope you guys will agree with me).
