Baby Calendar
Gingerbread Dog

This disc brought me back to a lovely childhood state of wonder and bliss.
When I was a little tyke, I used to mostly play outside with the other kids from the neighbourhood. It wasn’t until right before bedtime that I would indulge in a little television viewing, where I would watch a short polish cartoon. Baby Calendar’s Gingerbread Dog is doing so much for me right now, and included are waves of those lovely memories of childhood, play, toys and cartoons. Everything from their album cover, to their latest CD’s title, and of course, the band’s name itself, brings it all back in a sweet sweeping motion. Cheers to Baby Calendar and their magnificent, soft and kid-like feel.
They are a lovely trio from Miami, Florida, who give us a great CD that is simple, honest, optimistic and just so much fun. They have a gentleness about them that is hardly found in music, an innocence and cuteness that is all their own. I’m a naturally positive person, and it’s the positivity radiating from Baby Calendar that instantly impressed my optimistic soul. That alone certainly would be enough, but there is indeed more. This band has charisma, charm, uniqueness, imagination and creativity. Yes, quite the package.
Upon first listen I was able to relate to this disc and instantly understood what they are doing and where they are coming from, applauding their lovely efforts. I was impressed with the harmonies, the flow of each song, the ever-so-wonderful mix of the xylophone, tambourine and clapping of the hands. Jackie Biver’s voce is light and sweet, and it left a smile on my face.
My favourite songs on the record are “The Way of the Samurai” and “Skibbledeebee”, although everything from “Zipped Up” to “Zipped Down” is also great indeed.
Baby Calendar radiates a very personal and distinct beauty, and are simply bright rays of sunshine breaking through the clouds when you need it most.
With so much negativity going on in the world around us, it was a nice change to find a band that has such a light and airy spirit and vibe to them. It was a tasty treat to listen to Gingerbread Dog, and I must say that I am indeed a happy girl. Two thumbs up all around.
