Michael Bulko had a chance to sit down with one of Toronto's most exciting bands OPOPO prior to Friday's TWM show.  Below is the result, enjoy!

Michael: Can you just give a brief little rundown of how OPOPO got started?

Brian: The band was started on a computer a long time ago and we figured OPOPO was a lot easier to spell because they’re next to each other on the keyboard and in the alphabet so we wouldn’t forget.

Michael: So that’s the whole story behind the name, or is there anything else that goes into it?

Bryan (Vocals, guitar): It kind of does describe the sound of the music, but it really just originated with the letters O and P.

Michael: How would you describe the live OPOPO experience?

Corey (Synth, vocals): It’s not always the same as on the album. We like to take a lot of chances and do a lot of different things live to keep it fresh and interesting for us as well as the audience.

Michael: Your Myspace is very vague and mysterious, what’s the reason behind that?

Bryan: It’s more of a cryptic choice of words…

Craig (Bass, vocals): The ‘E’ character was broken on his computer. That’s why it sounds really broken and distorted.

Bryan: If you know the word ‘cacophony’ I just learned it the other day but we found it really describes our abrasiveness. That’s kind of how the music sounds and that’s how we try to write too but it can get a little hard on the eyes… instead of the ears.

Craig: And pronouns are over-rated.

Michael: What are you guys looking forward to in the future, for the band?

Corey: First of all we’re going to Denmark in about a month, we’re going to play the SPOT festival, yeah we got a spot there…

Bryan: Our EP is coming out on the 29th. But we’ve got our own copies of that already anyways.

Craig: I’m looking forward to the window seat on the way there [to Denmark] and now that it’s recorded, it’s official – I’ve got it on the way there.

Bryan: God damnit, I was going to rock, paper, scissors for it!

Michael: What do you guys have in store for tonight at the Rancho?

Bryan: Ourselves, the stage…

Corey: Kanye shades!

Bryan: Yeah, we got ourselves some specialty shades; I hope they’re not too gimmicky, there’s a lot of plastic covering the eyes.
