Brandon's Top 10 Albums of 2005

10. FRANZ FERDINAND
You Could Have It So Much Better

This album was much better than I thought it would be, in fact I had low expectations after the huge success and blowup that Franz suffered after the release of the first album. Regardless I figured that it had a shot since I did enjoy the first album quite a bit, it just seemed like a lot to live up to. So I was wrong, and this album is way better than I could have imagined it would be. Franz Ferdinand doesn't disappoint, you get the same old catchy guitar riffs and the familiar sound that the vocals provide. The funny thing about this is that Franz was able to put my mind at ease within two tracks, then I trusted it the rest of the way, which probably allowed me to enjoy it a lot more in the end.

9. BLACKALICIOUS
The Craft

If this album had been in my possession longer than a week when I did this than it might have made it to a much higher spot on the list, hell it might have ended up better than The Perceptionists. Well that’s saying a lot, but I do know that with more time this album would medal higher, and its because of the upbeat and funky beats that Blackalicious throws together on this. He is basically showcasing his abilities on paper, on the mic and in the booth, this dude does it all and his album is probably better for it. I know that most people will think Kanye West had the best hip hop album this year, but those people would be wrong, I think at minimum two albums are better, hell maybe even a few more than that, but Kanye your good, just not as good as you think you are.

8. THE DROPKICK MURPHYS
The Warrior's Code

Celtic or Scottish or whatever the hell type of punk this is, its fucking badass. I never really thought that I could get into this type of punk but what whatever reason The Dropkick Murphies are a band thats huge energy and sea shanty tunes rip up a whole disc. Some stranger instruments are mixed into the songs, flutes, bagpipes, and other horns that I can't tell apart. However a lot of these songs boil down to the fact that they sound like the whole band sings the whole song, which is kind of a neat concept, I know that they have a lead singer but they use a lot of background vocals on several songs. This is the band that remixed Tessie for the Boston Red Sox, which is a way old song that is aparently the Bo Sox theme song, its a totally bad song, and even the Dropkicks can't seem to fix it.

7. VARIOUS ARTISTS
Look At All The Love We Found

I liked this cover album the more that I listened to it. Since Sublime is my favourite all-time band you can imagine that I might love the idea of owning this particular CD, I'm a moron though and haven't bought it yet. I will buy it though because I know it will be one of my last opportunities to own something that is connected to Brad Nowell. This covers album is very well done, the guest range from No Doubt, Camper Van Beethoven, Jack Johnson, and tons of others that I can't remember at this moment. The CD includes all of their best songs redone by newer artists, there is one song that is a rap cover of April 29 1992 which is the riot song, and that song is fucking dope when Sublime does it, but this rapper blows he is worse that Vanilla Ice.

6. COMEBACK KID
Wake The Dead

There are not enough things that I can say about this album, there are so many songs that the guitar is punked to the extreme and I feel like I'm having a seizure. All joking aside though this is punk that paralyzes, and I mean that in a good way. The vocals are pretty hard but not to the point where theres screaming because that wouldn't touch my top 100 list. Anyway way that I cut it Comeback Kid is delivering a high energy harder punk that I have been looking for this year, it didn't have enough to beat some of my favourites like The Transplants or the newly crowned Soviettes, but its still pretty sicke.

5. GORILLAZ
Demon Days

The number one album of the site makes it to number five on my list. I tied with Dan for highest ranking on them so that is kind of odd that the disc lands the number one spot. Its fine by me though because this album is good, I mean the first one is pretty good so I was assuming that this one would have a shot at being decent. Those expections were surpassed as you can see, but I think that is because no one really is doing what Gorillaz are doing, I can't even think of a band to compare them too, maybe a more electronic Modest Mouse? I don't know but what I do know is its fucking awesome, there were a lot of songs that I like, I can't believe that those of use that selected a track from the disc for our compilations managed to pick separate tracks without talking to each other. But I guess that lets you know the range and diversity of the album as it appeals to all different musical tastes.

4. THE AQUABATS
Charge!!

Weird bastards that they are, these guys actually manage to string together an entire album worth of totally listenable and fun music. The genre in question has a lot of energy, I don't know what to call it so I'll just call it The Aquabats. One of the better albums I heard this year was based on the fun level of the album, that says a lot. I mean when they sing about stuff that is ridiculous, but they are actually singing about that stuff. Some bands use metaphors but not The Aquabats, they sing about exactly what they mean too. Take my advice and buy this CD, the band has been around for ten years and I can't believe they slipped under the radar with such a unique sound.

3. THE PERCEPTIONISTS
Black Dialogue

My favourite hip hop group of the year and album are the Perceptionists. I do know that every song on this album is great, these guys are an aggressive trio that have some sicke beats and even heavier bass. The thing that makes it even better is the message that these guys deliver, they seem to have a bit of spite in their voice at times but they also make light of well accepted situations. Basically these guys know how to put together a hip hop album, I look forward to their next release because this one has left me wanting more for months.

2. TRANSPLANTS
Haunted Cities

I'm so glad that Tim Armstrong is a good producer, without his ability in the production booth then bands like The Transplants would have a harder existence. This album was a fair bit more ambitious than their previous self-titled debut but I still liked it. I know that other Transplants fans I talked to didn't really like this follow up album as much as I did, so I think that I'm one of the only people that enjoyed this album. There is one song I have to skip everytime and thats track four but other than that I think this album is pretty neat.

1. THE SOVIETTES
LP III

I know not too many will agree, hell maybe no one, but this is hands down the best album that I heard this year. And of course it’s a punk album, why the fuck would it be anything else? Hands down The Soviettes blew me out of the water, and all those people who think that chicks can't fucking rock? Well listen to this album and you will realize your wrong, oh wait you won't listen to this album because girls sing and you hate that right? If I'm wrong and its not the best album, then that would be correct, but your ignorant ass won't know unless you hear it so hear this album.
